Valencia hospital pulled prosthesis from patient – Spain

A 23-year-old man who underwent a complex knee operation at Hospital Arnau de Vilanova in Valencia could never be able to walk properly again

7th May 2013

After his knee operation last Monday, Adrian García, was ready to fit a prosthesis that would keep his leg straight while healing but the orthopaedics company rejected the young man’s claim for the prosthetic device after he told them his family could only pay the €152 of the prosthesis cost at the end of the month.

Instead the hospital removed the initial apparatus and put his leg in plaster; a decision that García insists has meant his knee is not immobile and may never fully recover.

“I might never be able to walk properly again,” García told the daily Levante EMV.

After the news went on the national Spanish TV on Friday, many spaniards throughout Spain have offered to pay for his leg prosthesis.
