Biggest cyberattack launched from Barcelona – Spain

Granollers residents had no idea that the strange foreigner with the orange van living in their town was the Dutchman accused of launching the biggest cyberattack in history

May 2013

The orange Mercedes van parked outside a snackbar in Granollers (Barcelona) caused a stir when people realized that his owner, a foreign eccentric-looking tall man spent the whole day bringing computer towers and laptops into his van that had a solar panel and three antennas coming out of the roof.

“It was impossible not to notice him” one of the locals said.

The man, Sven Olaf Kamphuis, 35, went inside the vehicle on April 16th and did not leave until his arrest on April 25.

Back in March, a denial of service (DoS) attack on the Swiss security firm Spamhaus slowed down internet access across Europe and the United States. Authorities believe the attack was initiated by Cyberbunker, a hosting company linked to Kamphuis.
